We had planned the trip for quite some time, and were excited that our plans had come to fruition. I really made the day for the Expedia employee who booked our flight and motel reservations when he asked for the names and birthdates of the travelers. He was astounded when I told him they were: Barbara Tingey, 87: Lola Christensen, 84: Shirleen Anderson, 75, and myself, 70 – and that another brother, Hollis Johnson, 81 would be joining us to help celebrate our other brother’s 90th birthday. He kept laughing and saying, Wow!”

We met at the airport and after successfully negotiation through the kiosk ticketing and with boarding passes in hand, we proceeded to security. No problem – well, maybe just a little - first the officers pulled Barbara’s suitcase off to one side, opened it, and began to inspect its contents. Then Lola set off the alarm and was pulled off to the other side, positioned in the “spread eagle” and was scanned with the wand and patted down. I was helplessly trying to pull their items off the conveyer belt as I giggled and hunted for my camera. Too late for photos, but I’m sure you can picture it in your mind. We all had a good laugh over our two 80’s “terrorist sisters.”

Our flight was good and we arrived on schedule at PDX. Of course, we had no idea how we were going to get from the airport to Calaroga! We started asking people as we pulled our suitcases along, and the Lord placed angels to take care of us. We found out that MAX, the Portland light-rail system goes right to the convention center by our motel and that since we are “honored citizens” we could ride for only $1. So – off we went through the airport dragging our suitcases behind us.

When we got off MAX, we looked around and started for the address of the motel, but came to a dead end. Again, there was a security person parked at the corner who asked us where we were going and gave us directions. We had to go back the way we had come and around by another street. As we trekked up the sidewalk, we sang, “For some must push and some must pull.” Finally, we found our destination, unloaded our baggage, and walked over to see Stan in time to eat dinner with him. We were literally in Calaroga’s back yard. We phoned Hollis to let him know about MAX.
The next day, we settled in and ate breakfast at the motel. Then we descended on Stan and his apartment. We did some cleaning and sorting there hoping to make things easier. We also found Walgreen’s and made a few purchases that we needed for the open house. Everyone at Calaroga was so helpful and seemed so happy that we were there. I hadn’t slept well, and my stomach was churning, put I pressed on! We met with Kim, the activities director and one of the charge nurses, Patti, who were both knowledgeable and willing to assist in any way. The room appeared to be great, and plans were going well. We ate with Stan again and met a friend of his, Henry Clark, an LDS man who lives there. After dinner, as we were walking back to the elevator, we heard singing and there was a group who gets together every Friday night to enjoy just singing old songs. Of course, we had to join in! The piano player, Charlotte, was wonderful, playing anything requested by ear. Their last song was, “God Bless America” and it was really touching to see them all stand, remove their hats, and put their hands over their hearts. These people really love their country! We joined in with tears in our eyes. Afterward, as they were leaving, we began singing, “Days of Summer Glory” impromptu. They all cheered and clapped. What fun! When we entered the elevator, there was Hollis! So we all greeted and visited and were happy to be together!

Saturday, Stan arranged for his friend, Dennis, to drive us around in a van to see some sites. We saw Stan’s old house and neighborhood, drove through Portland, and stopped at the Rose Garden for photos. We ate at a sweet little sidewalk restaurant, and it was all very beautiful and relaxing. In the evening, I just couldn’t eat, but went to the library and tried to find some things on the internet. Then we just talked and sang and reminisced about those good old days. It was good for me to be with them, because I was so small when they were at home (Stan & Barbara were gone before I was born or only just a baby) that I really didn’t know a lot of things. Now I feel like I am a real part of the family. I still don’t feel well, but hope I can sleep and my stomach will settle down.

Sunday – the REALLY BIG DAY! Stan had arranged with his friend, who arranged with another friend to come and pick all of us up for church. It took 2 cars to get us there, but we arrived just as they were singing the opening song. It was their testimony meeting, and they may be few in numbers, but they were strong in spirit! It was an outstanding and inspirational meeting, and we all hoped Stan could feel the spirit because it was so strong. What a magnificent experience to be in that wonderful meeting with my 2 brothers and 3 sisters! After Sacrament meeting, we were again taken back to Calaroga so we could get ready for the open house. I am feeling just a little better, but not well, and just praying things will go well. AND IT DID! We had all brought photos from home and displayed them around the room. We also had a sheet for notes from the guests to Stan. The room was set up beautifully, the refreshments were attractively arranged and delicious to the taste. There was a heaping fruit plate, an assortment of cheeses and crackers, sugar-free cookies, fruit punch, coffee & tea – and it was almost all gone. We took only a little fruit and cheese home to Stan’s apartment. We counted 36 guests besides the family. I arranged for Charlotte to come in and play the piano, and that really brightened things up. Hollis took the mic and welcomed and thanked the guests, we sang “Happy Birthday” and then the sisters sang again, “Days of Summer Glory.” Stan also spoke, and the whole affair was OUTSTANDING!! We spent the evening in Stan’s room singing and singing and telling jokes and stories. It was heart-warming for all of us!

Monday – the day we have to finish all we need to do! We started off with a breakfast at the Cadallic Café – again going in 2 cars, which was great. We made another trip to Walgreen’s, arranged with maintenance and moved furniture. I just had an idea that things would look better and be easier for Stan if we moved his bed and some other pieces of furniture – and it turned out SO GOOD! We also arranged to have them clean his carpet and talked more with the nurse about some things they could do to make it easier for everyone. We finished sorting, put everything away, and made a file for him to help keep his paperwork straight. In the evening, we shared our last meal and last night together. I can finally eat, but can’t say that I am really hungry. I feel really good, though about what we have enjoyed and accomplished during our stay. We may just have to do it again sometime soon!!!

Happy Birthday!!!

Yes, I did hack into your computer ...
to wish you a happy 70th Birthday!!!
Love you,
Sherry

OK - here we are in the cupcake factory. But I have been as sick as I can remember for a long time. I have just "laid low" and suffered in silence. The hard part was that I had to miss Brittney's wedding. I am feeling a little better now thanks to lots of "miracle drugs", but am still staying in. Anyway, I've had lots of time to think about my childhood and the Garland I called home. Here is a photo of 'my' mountains - the ones I saw each morning when I woke. With many opal mines around, two people can pay $500 and get a 3-yard scoop off the wall. You then have all day to sort through the material and keep whatever you find. You can also pay $75 and go through the tailings. Hope you all had a restful or exciting holiday. We just hung around here except that we made a trip to Boungiful for a BBQ on Monday at Curtis'. Lots of things going on in the family, and I think of each of you every day. Dar is doing training; Paul is graduating; Lisa is back at work after Miriam's birth; Jayna & Tyler have sold their house and bought another; Glory is getting to run a marathon in Logan; Mercedes is coming to see us tomorrow (YEAH!); Sherry & Dan & family have their house up for sale and Sherry is back working; Curt & Kallie are getting ready for their marriage celebration; Lexi & Jeff are planning their marriage; Dane has just written a computer program that will save his company big bucks; and, I'm sure lots of other dazzling news from other family members. I did try to make contact with some this weekend, but I guess everyone was just having fun - GOOD!!

We are still doing some yard work, but it has gotten easier, so that is good. I really want to enjoy SOME of the summer! I am still mostly feeling good, but still have some tired days that I just can't do much. Life goes on, though. I have to tell you a fun thing that happened: we were flood-irrigating for the first time last week when 2 wild ducks swooped down and landed in the water in the back yard! They swam around, dug up some bugs or worms, and just rested in the shade for a couple of hours. Then they were gone. Never had that happen before. Life is full of surprises!

I know everyone is busy, but I'd love an update when anyone has time. Anyway, we had a great weekend and got to try out the new basement space, so here finally are some photos of the project for those who haven't seen the finished product. I must add, though, that it looks best when filled with family!
1. The mess after we tore out the walls
2. After the tile was installed
3. The best thing next to our visit to Temple Square, was to see them trying all the American food at Chuck-a-rama. They use words like lovely, nice, and beautiful to describe the food. I sure love them! Costco was a fun experience for them, too. They have nothing like these things in Australia! And Braxton had never seen snow, so you can imagine his excitement when he looked out the door at church on that snowy Sunday, and found it coming down! They had a wonderful time!

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; One is Ty on his b-day, and the others are from Miriam's shower. Note the "baby shower" with Jordyn and Sawyer. Someone from Lisa's work made it for her work shower, so we put the babies in and they were so cute. We really had a good time in sunny St. George. My favorite parts were driving with Dar & Britt and Sawyer (he was such a good traveler), tending all the cute babies (Lori, Lisa's sister had her 9-month-old Caelin there, too), and the warm sunshine! Jordyn is 7 months old and Sawyer is 6 months old.

Friday, January 30, 2009: A very strange yet special day! 50 years ago today (on a Friday) I married and was sealed to Calvin Douglas Stewart in the Logan Temple. And SNOW! And CHRISTMAS!

Sunday Dec. 21: I started in baking and preparing for bingo. I had choir practice at 11:30 and church at noon. I sang in a double mixed quartet and the choir did 2 numbers, one of which I directed the congregation on. I think everything went over pretty well. We decided to go home after Sacrament and get ready for bingo, and I really took most of the time to finish preparing. I thought I was ready, but I kept thinking of "things." We had chili, cornbread, veggie platter and drinks. Then I had made 2 kinds of cookies and cinnamon rolls. Everyone didn’t come at once, but everyone CAME! It was wonderful to see everyone and so good to be together. Some still have some sad feelings, but I hope each one has some special memory of the occasion. We played bingo and each one was so appreciative of the silly little gifts I had for them. After "THE" Christmas story and some sweet thoughts from Dar, I sent them all off with jerky and shalalie roll and little gifts. Congratulations on Lexi for getting a great job, to Zac for his winning spirit in wrestling, and to Curtis for the wonderful Christmas spirit he showed. I really love my family and wish I could see them every day! Dec. 22: We hurried out early in the morning to go to Savers and get our car inspected, but it started snowing right at 9 am and we really got dumped! We just came back home and enjoyed the day watching the snow fall. It was a beautiful snow with big flakes falling thick and piling quickly up in the yard. It let up about 2 pm so we both went out and shoveled for a while. It was a very wet snow – a good one for snow men and snow forts, but there was no one around to build them. One neighbor cleared the sidewalks with their 4-wheeler snow plow and another one came by and helped with his snow blower. We must have had 10”, so we really have big drifts now from the shoveling. Right now I am really enjoying snow!

DEC. 24: After some packing and errend-running, we took off for Jon’s. The roads were good and we arrived in good time. Jon had gotten home before Lisa and had the house all in order, he had added some rammed earth decorations, candles lit, and Christmas music playing. He also had set up the baby room - even to hanging up baby clothes in the closet. I love that boy!! Ty and Lisa soon came along with Christopher, Brittia, Jordyn, and Lisa’s 2 sisters and their husbands/partners and Cailyn. Lisa brought home a huge lot of food from her work, so we all ate until we were stuffed. Then we each opened a present and had some Christmas stories – including THE story. It was good! All our family stayed over night, so it was good to be together. It started raining, so we knew it was snowy up north.

CHRISTMAS: We all slept in late, then Harold and I made a huge breakfast casserole. We opened presents while it was baking and then ate until we were stuffed again. We just relaxed, watched some basketball on TV, and ate some more. It rained much of the day, and as we talked with family, we found out that it was really snowing other places in Utah and Idaho. And there was jerky and shalalie rolls all around! Good Christmas! I surely love my family!!

Dec. 26: We slept in again, washed bedding and then loaded up and headed for home. The snow had left the roads icy and snowy a lot of the time, so we just went slow. We met Tyson on the way and brought up a game for Josh from him. We arrived home to find that we had only gotten about 2” of snow here, and were happy for that. Other places around really got dumped on. Jon came up also, but Lisa stayed behind. Her back is still giving her some grief. Harold & I opened our gifts after we got home, and I think he was really pleased with his gifts. And I got a wonderful gift from Lola – the book, The Life and Adventures of Santa Clause, which is the book mother read and got my name from. It is published in 1902, has the family names in it, and I will treasure it always.

This image is of some of Jon's decorations - candle holders he made from rammed earth - I want some!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://haroldandnacele.blogspot.com/2008/12/bingo-and-snow-and-christmas.html' title='BINGO! The first problem was that there wasn’t any sunshine that day or the day after – only lots of rain! I wished Lexi was with us, but it didn’t work out for her.

Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27: We slept in a little, but were soon busy with preparing dinner. Lisa had been down with back problems, so that left me with most of the fixing to do. I did my best, but I know it probably wasn’t my best effort. We did enjoy each other’s company, though. Besides Harold, Stan & I and Tyson, Lisa’s two sisters, a husband, a male friend, and cute little Caylin were there. It was a good crowd and we had a relaxing time. We even got to watch 2 movies while we were there.

Nov. 28: More sun today, and Harold & I did a little shopping. Mostly too crowded to enjoy it, though. Jon & Lisa had a shock – they got their credit card bill and someone had stolen their identity and charged some ridiculous stuff on it - $7500 worth! They had bought a bunch of games and taken all the gang to dinner several times – big tippers like $200 or $150 each time! So they spent the day on the phone and the internet and being interviewed by the police. It seems that everything is going to be OK and they won’t have to pay. The charges were all in California; some on the same dates that Jon was charging here in Utah. It surely makes a hassle, though!

Nov. 29: It was a beautiful day, but we had to pack up and head for home again. I hated to leave Lisa and Jon with their problems, but there really isn’t anything I could do anyway. We stopped in Cedar to see our cousin, Marilyn and drove through Kingston to see where Dallas’ grandparents live. It was a nice change, and we still arrived home in time for Stan to watch USC win their game.

Sunday, Nov. 30: We started off the day with a good breakfast. I had choir at 11:30 and then our meetings starting at 1. In the evening we taught our temple class again. It is so good to do that. I love getting to know people and giving the lessons!

Dec. 1: Well, here we are to December! I don’t feel ready for Christmas at all, but I am determined that I am going to enjoy it and feel the spirit – I’ve been missing it for a few years. I already have all my snowmen out and some other decorations and am anxious to finish. Then I have to work on some shopping. We actually got up early and went to Wal-Mart and the grocery store. Then later in the day we went to the mall and found Stan a U of U T-shirt that he wanted. He was so pleased. We then went looking for furniture again. In the evening, we had a wonderful lesson (our last) with 2 of our couples. It was so sweet and spiritual and I feel so privileged to have this calling!
I'm not a very good blogger, but will keep trying. In the meantime, YOU GO, YOU BLOGGERS & I'LL KEEP READING!!!

Thankful Thanksgiving

Nov. 21: Had a great day and the opportunity to go with Dar & Brad to see Paul’s team win the state football tournament. It was so fun! We rode Trax up to the Rice-Eccles Stadium and back. It was so-o-o crowded and took forever, but it was still fun. The weather was cold, but we were bundled up and so kept reasonably warm. The game caused some fretting in the beginning because it seemed like Alta just couldn’t get their act together, but in the last quarter they came alive and ended up playing like their old selves, winning the game in the last 33 seconds. Everyone was on their feet cheering at the top of their lungs. We couldn’t help but feel a little bad for Bingham because they played their hearts out too, but were so happy that Paul was again on a state championship team. It was 11:30 before I got home. Stan and Harold were both still waiting up for me – with a surprise. Stan said my “two boyfriends” had gone out shopping while I was away. I couldn’t figure out what they had bought and looked all over. Finally Harold said, “feel this!” and rubbed the bed. Then I knew. They had bought me a heated mattress pad. It was totally unexpected, but I couldn’t wait to get ready and crawl into bed. It was heaven!! Thank you!!!
Sunday, November 23, 2008: Another eventful (or uneventful) week. We have enjoyed having Stan here and have been able to do a few things like going out for breakfast and grocery shopping. Today I sang in a quartet in church and Stan came to hear me. We sang “Thanksgiving Medley,” and everyone said it sounded really good. I think Stan was proud of his little sister. I’m so thankful that I can still sing! I brought Stan home after church and we ate a little together; then I returned to Relief Society.

I Just have to send out a little Thanksgiving greeting to all our family, and tell everyone how very thankful I am for each one. What a blessing our family is to me. May we always appreciate and love and lift each other. Each one has strengths and weaknesses – that’s what makes us a family - we just love each other anyway! And remember the story of the 5 kernals of corn:

In early New England, it was customary to place 5 kernals of corn beside each plate during the Thanksgiving meal. This was a reminder of earlier and rougher times for the New England Pilgrims; times in which food was so scarce that 5 kernals of corn was the ration given each person from the common food stores. Each kernal carried a reminder:

1. Our total dependence upon God

2. Every blessing we receive carries with it an equal responsibility

3. We are not blessed just for our own comfort, but so we can be of service to others

4. Many of the greatest blessings come as a result of moments of deepest despair

5. Harold likes to go early – and we did! It’s a long boring road between Orem, Utah and Grants Pass, Oregon. We took turns driving and were grateful for the dry roads with only a few sprinkles here and there. When we neared Medford, I phoned Trina, she reached Dane and we all met at a Mexican restaurant in Rogue River for dinner. They brought Brett along, but the girls were both working, so we didn’t get to see them. We had a good visit, and were so glad to see them even if it was for just a short while. We stayed at Yolonda’s in Grants Pass Monday night, and it was so good to lay our heads down on a bed!

Tuesday we drove over to Cave Junction. It poured most of the day, and I remembered that November usually has lots of dreary rain. That little town holds both fond and fearsome memories for me! We went first to Justin & Heather’s and by some miracle found Justin at home and Heather soon came. They are doing well in many ways - Heather is working and Justin is happy. He has the parasites back, and I gave him some suggestions for curing them. Justin is always going about doing good and not getting paid for anything. Bless them both! We then went to see Doug & Florence. I feel so sorry for Doug. He is trying to cure his cancer, but it is really painful. It seems to be all gone on the left side and the huge crusty mass on the right side seems to be lifting a little. Say a prayer for him. We ate at Taylor’s Sausage and bought some jerky and linguisa. Very good as usual!

We slept at Yolonda’s again Tues. night and left early Wednesday morning for Portland. We arrived about noon, but Stan was busy with Dennis, so we stopped at a Costco to look around. Anyway, we ate dinner with Stan and then drove to Donna’s. Thursday we had a meeting with some of the Calaroga people at 11 with Stan. We walked around outside also. It was clearing a little and seemed good to get out. For lunch we drove to the Cadillac Café and met Dennis, Rebecca and Chuck. We had a good lunch, but things are a little strained and strange. It is as if Stan is trying to include us into his circle of friends rather than breaking away from them. We said good-bye and returned to Donna’s to spend the evening with them. Harold tried to fix her washer, but decided a repairman had better be called.

Friday, we left early, scooped up Stan and headed for home. The weather was mild and sunny and the drive quite pleasant. At Sherry’s, as usual, we were welcomed warmly with a delicious dinner waiting. I love that girl and her family! After a wonderful sleep, we again ate a marvelous meal with all her family. They are just so cute and sweet! The girls begged long enough that the Christmas tree was dragged out, assembled and decorated. Sherry later told me they went ahead and decorated the whole house. I wish someone would do that for me! We didn’t leave until about 10:30 because it was so hard to leave the happy scene, but we knew we needed to get going. When we reached Barbara’s, she had a wonderful little lunch prepared and we visited and visited and visited. Too long, in fact, because it put us even later. It was good, though. Then we drove on to Shirleen and Don’s where again she had made a wonderful meal of meatloaf and creamed peas and potatoes. It was so good. I can tell I am getting fatter! After a good visit there, we went on to Lola’s, visited some more, and then at her kind invitation, we each found a bed and crashed. Harold and Stan were just too tired to go on! Sunday we drove home and arrived in time to unload, take a shower and make it to Relief Society! It is good to be home!!!!

Today I got the laundry done, took Stan to the bank and bought groceries at Macey’s. Then while he napped, Harold & I went to Costco. Actually (although I know it is hard to believe that grocery shopping can be such an exciting event) it was a fun, relaxing day. Now I have caught up my journal, done up the dishes, and even played a game on the computer. I heard from Lisa that Julia’s shower was a hit and she got tons of stuff – good for her! Sorry to miss the fun!

So – there are the life and adventures of Mother, Grama ‘Cele and Nacele. Not anything earth shattering, just pressing forward with a perfect brightness of hope!

We have enjoyed getting out house together and are beginning to feel somewhat settled (except that we have no furniture yet, but it will come) We have enjoyed watching a football game or two with Dar & Brad and are so proud of the effort the boys make and what good players they are. WE also had a great weekend with some of the grandkids here, visited at Barbara's and helped in her yard, had a fun time with Sherry's family down from Idaho along with some of our Utah kids and grandkids. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren are so-o-o great!
Saturday, Nov. 9: Today was a busy and very special day for us as well as some others. First of all, we took all our “stuff” down to the commodity share. The Spanish people were there scooping up all they could carry. We also put out a box and a bag of food for the scouting food drive which was in emergency because the food bank is almost empty. Then, we were privileged to attend the endowment session and sealing for the Finch’s, to whom we have taught the temple classes. They were sealed on their 61st wedding anniversary! They had lots of family there with them, and they all thanked us with tearful eyes for our help in getting them to the temple. (I really don’t feel like we have done much, but with the Lord’s help anything is possible.) They are the last of the siblings to get their endowments and now the whole family is sealed. It was just so cute to see them: so short, so crippled, yet so radiant. Evelyn was in a wheelchair and Jay was tottering along with the help of family. When they were sealed, they sat across the alter from each other – Jay on a chair and Evelyn in the wheelchair, with their hands so crippled that they could hardly hold hands. As the sealer talked with them, the spirit was so strong. He told them that there were ancestors present who were so joyful at their sealing. He also said that angels had been attending them and those who helped prepare them for the temple. He testified that the Lord had been waiting for them to come to His house and that His presence was among us there. I can add my testimony to that because there really was a powerful spirit in the room. What a blessing it has been for us to be able to teach these temple lessons, and I know that we have gained more than anyone else. Somehow, I just felt so powerful there in the temple. I know Heavenly Father is in charge and I really felt peaceful about our family’s problems and all the turmoil going on in our nation and the world.
THEN- today (Sunday) we were able to be present when Sawyer was blessed by his great-grandfather, Raymond Finch - and when we connected it all up - Raymond is a nephew of Jay Finch with whom we had just attended the temple. What a small world. They are wonderful people, and invited us to stop by their ranch down in Kingston (near St. George.) Sawyer looked so cute - I'm sure Julia will post photos on her blog. We leave early tomorrow on a trip to Portland to pick up Stan for a visit, and will stop in Idaho on our way back. We send lots of love and happy greetings to all!

PLUM CRAZY!

Sometimes life makes you crazy. This is one of those times! I feel as though we haven’t even had any summer with so much traveling. 4 trips to Oregon since the end of January are about 3 too many! And we aren’t through yet!

I just can’t seem to even keep up with communication with my kids and grandkids. Our church callings are really busy ones, too, and that doesn’t help (except to bring us blessings, which isn’t too bad.) We taught 2 temple classes last week and have another this week besides we have to speak in the 6th ward on Sunday with the High Counselor. We also are supposed to be going visiting new move-ins, and aren’t getting it done very well.

Then there is the house – yes this old house is getting some work done in it. The bathroom turned out really great (and I’ll post photos as soon as I learn how.) The insurance company came through and we have fixed the wall and ceiling where the water damaged it in the basement, and decided to do some wall work while we were at it. Next project is the worst one – replacing all the and sub-floor and floor that was damaged. I can’t think about that yet. It means I have to unload the china hutch. Aiiiiiyyyyyy!

Of course in the middle of it all, the plum tree is spreading forth it’s prolific branches laden with ripe plums. And this is what’s really making me plum crazy. I have done 8 batches of that delicious jam and will do a couple more before I say, “Enough!” I should have some to share with family, anyway. I think a good pruning is in order before next year.

While enjoying the Olympics, it has been brought home to me again what a difference one degree or one second can make. So many events have been won or lost by such a small margin. Water is hot at 211 degrees, but it doesn’t boil until it reaches 212 – just one degree more. Think how exact the instruments on airplanes have to be because only one degree off course could cause a catastrophe. I hope that we can all take a look at our lives and make adjustments if there is something that is just one degree off. One degree now can make a mile of difference down the road. Let’s don’t let one degree keep us from reaching our goals and being together as a family eternally.

Next time – maybe photos!

Welcome, welcome, Sabbath Morning!!

First of all, Happy Father’s Day to all you wonderful dads! Keep on doing your best and know our families are always in our prayers (and names in the temple).

How can each moment be so busy??? This has been a busy few days as usual. Last Friday, the 6th we took Stan up to the Hansen cousins luncheon in Ogden, and then he went home with Lola for a few days. On our way home, we stopped in Centerville and Harold cut a tree for one of Curtis’ neighbors. It was quite a sight to see him fell the huge pine, laying it perfectly along the fence line without touching any buildings, fences or property. I heaved a sigh of relief when it was over!

On Saturday, we attended my 50th class reunion – what a kick – how can that be – I should still be a teenager – not with all those old people! Then Sunday we attended an early ward and then headed for St. George. We had some great bbq hamburgers with Jon & Lisa, she had a girl’s camp meeting, and then the guys watched the bb game. We stayed until Thursday, attending Tuacahn on Monday & Tuesday nights with Don & Shirleen. It was wonderful as usual. It relaxed us so much that we slept in until after 10:30 on Monday morning – a virtual impossibility for us! On Wed. evening, we visited with Ty and Chris at their house and enjoyed a taste of their bbq chicken and lots of watermelon. They seem to be busy, but doing OK. After we arrived home on Thursday, we hit the ground running and have been running ever since!

Right now we are madly packing getting ready to leave for Portland early in the morning. I hope to be back in about 10 days, because then we have to get ready for company from Australia!! We are really excited to see Jessie and Teal, but really need a little break to prepare for their visit. They are a woman and daughter from a family we came to love in Australia, and stayed with some of their family in NZ. I just wanted to have the house and yard looking nice before they get here – well it isn’t wonderful, but it is better than it was! I think it will take us a year or 2 to get things back to normal. Our company may even be at our house before we arrive home, depending upon how long it takes us to clean out Stan’s apartment, have a huge porch sale, and get him settled into a temporary assisted living there. I WILL BE SO HAPPY TO HAVE THIS CHAPTER COMPLETED!

The plans are that we will bring his paintings, sculptures, and anything that will fit that might be of interest to the family back to Utah with us. Then we will bring the things that he won’t want to keep to the family reunion on JULY 12th, so – ANYONE WHO WANTS ANY PAINTINGS OR OTHER THINGS NEEDS TO LET ME KNOW, and I will keep them for you. After we return, I’ll try to get a list up to send to you, so you will know more specifics. Jon & Lisa can use a painting or two and Sherry & Dan (who have been to visit him and know his paintings) will have a specific one that they have requested. Let me know ASAP – thanks!!

Well, as usual, we have missed some more great events – Paul’s birthday, Christy’s shower, ect, ect., but please know that our thoughts are there even if we can’t be! I guess that’s all for this busy week – and now on to the next one. I feel like I’m on a treadmill, but I’m sure I’ll get off soon! Carry on, and stay happy, healthy, humble, and hopeful!

Here we are - home all safe and sound from our big auction adventure. Well, maybe not safe and sound, but at least we're home! I came home with a terrible sprained ankle, went to the doctor, got a brace and have been treating, rubbing, icing and taking pain pills. After 2 1/2 weeks, I can finally walk on it, but I can tell healing is still a long way off. Harold came home with a back out of place and a sore knee. His back is starting to feel better, but we are working on the knee - he has another doctor's appointment on Monday. We are hoping it is an easy fix, but hasn't been so far! So - here we are limping around trying to take care of Stan and not getting much else done. I do think we reached our objective, though, of earning enough money to either do the kitchen or a bathroom in our home, so that part is good. Well, I guess that is the only BIG news from our corner of the world, but at least we are beginning to feel like we are home. It has been a long 5 months of travel and uncertainty, and sometimes we have felt like visitors in our own community, but finally we can begin to do “normal” things. You know – like vacuum or do laundry or work in the yard and stare at the huge pile of stored “things” that is still awaiting us in our basement.

If I thought when we were first married that it was a wild ride, it is nothing compared to the ride we have been on since we came home from our mission. I’ve learned things I didn’t think I would ever need to know and some I didn’t want to know, but we press on! Stan is doing well considering what he has been through. We feel deeply for him as he is forced to make decisions that he wasn’t ready to make; change his life in a way that causes loss of freedom; and move forward into a new way of life. One with many restrictions and consequences. He is leaving behind a full, active life filled with friends and pleasurable activities. But it is a necessary change.

This experience hasn’t been easy on us either. We feel like we have sacrificed some family time and activities (which was our goal when we left Australia) to assist Stan with his needs and the changes he needed to make. And we have struggled with not being able to even finish our unpacking – or catch up our yard. It is so far behind that I can’t even see daylight. It makes me think if we ever get time, we had better simplify, simplify, simplify!!! If anyone has a spare hour we have two fences to prepare for and build, every bed to repair and/or plant, and about 5 billion weeds to take care of. So come on over – we’ll put you to work and have a bbq! I don’t even think we will be able to have a garden this year, which really makes me sad.

Our immediate plans are to attend my 50 year class reunion (yes, 50 years) on June 7 and then to spend a few days in St. George visiting Ty, Jon & Lisa and Christopher and attending a show at Tuachan with Don & Shirleen on the 9 & 10. Then we’ll get ready to take Stan to Portland, leaving the 16th of June. Shirleen, Harold & I will clean out and close his apartment while he stays in an assisted living there to visit with old friends, see his doctors and such. We are hoping we’ll be back in about 10 days. Stan plans to stay on for a while and then may fly home either for the reunion in July or later in August.

Stan would love to have some company, so anyone who feels they could spend a little time to visit here, would be greatly appreciated. He asks about each one and really has a wonderful memory that still works (usually better than mine.) We haven’t forgotten birthdays; it’s just that sometimes we CANNOT keep up with all of them. We are looking forward to this changing also as soon as we can get Stan’s life settled down.

Messages from family are our life-blood, so please let us hear from you. I hope I can put in an entry each week, so keep checking my blog – who knows, it may get interesting!!!! Stay happy, healthy, hopeful and humble - and remember who loves you.

Spring Greetings!!!

It seems that so many things are happening in the family that it is hard for me to keep up with them, so I thought I’d send along a little update newsletter so we can catch up on each other’s lives. Everyone will than have all the e-mail addresses I have and maybe you can catch each other up on details. Some news may be old – just ignore it. If I’ve made some errors or omissions, I apologize – just send along the correct information. I’ll just go down the line:

Mom & Harold: Harold has been driving truck and helping with the western auctions that a grand-son-in-law, Shawn does. The last 2 weeks he was in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma and Monday we both leave for Cave Junction to pick up a truck and then drive to Texas! Can you imagine that??? I didn’t plan to go with him and help with the paperwork at the auction, but things have worked out and it is the last auction of the season, so off we go! We appreciate Dar & Brad for taking us to the airport and Dane & Trina picking us up in Medford. Stan has been with us and we will pick him up again when we get home, and are so happy we are here and can help him. He has put his name on a waiting list for an assisted living facility in Ogden, and we are helping with the huge load of paperwork that goes along with insurance, Medicare, and changing from Oregon to Utah. Our yard is really in need after being neglected for 2 years, so we are playing catch -up in that area. Anyway, we are certainly staying busy!!!!

Sherry & Dan: This family has some great blogs, so for the real scoop go to dancrandallfamily.blogspot.com. Also check with them for an update on your Dad. Sherry & Dan have sold their business, Dan has written a book, and now they have another business starting up. Sherry, Curtis and Curtis’ fiancée, Callie, are all working with Dan to get things going.

Jayna & Tyler: CONGRATULATIONS! They just had their third beautiful little girl, Lila Mckay, weighing in at 7 lbs. 7 oz. They are busy with pre-school and other classes and activities for Grace and Caroline. Both girls are enthralled with princesses and horses. What a fun time for this little family!

Christy & Gabe are also expecting a baby in late July, but they want the sex of the baby to be a surprise, so aren’t telling. They have bought a home in Boise and are getting their things settled. It is a challenge since all their furniture and keepsakes were stolen from their storage unit. Thankfully, the insurance company is covering the loss, but it will still take much shopping and buying to replace all that can be replaced. Of course, the greatest loss is in the memory books, photos, and items from their wedding, Gabe’s mission, etc.

CONGRATULATIONS to Curtis who has just become engaged to Kallie from Boise. They are planning to be married later this year and are currently both working for Dan.

Jon & Lisa also have big news in their family, and many CONGRATULATIONS are in order here. Jon was privileged to baptize Lisa the end of March. It was a beautiful gathering, with all 4 of Jon’s kids making the trip to St. George. Jon is working for Hughes Construction and is building all kinds of things on the side, like a hydrogen generator, and he wants to build a rammed-earth house. Lisa continues her stressful yet rewarding job as an industrial engineer. They are enjoying beautiful St. George and being grandparents.

Christopher is now working in St. George for the same company as Tyson and they share an apartment there. Christopher and Brittia are expecting a baby girl the first of June, and then she will join him in St. George.

Joshua is still working for his same company and doing well. He is engaged to Katrina and they may be married later this summer also. He looked so good at Lisa’s baptism!

Brittney and Dallas are also expecting another baby – a boy in late July to join sweet little Brylee. They are currently in Florida where Dallas installs security alarms. They are planning a wedding soon and will probably have a reception when they get back to Utah in late August.

Julia and Darren both seem busy and happy. They are really involved with their horses and will be in parades and competition this summer as well as participating in search and rescue if needed.

Dane & Trina: Dane is in the middle of a huge up-grade for the computers for his company. It is really stressful and he will be VERY happy when it is over! In fact, I just heard he has completed it! CONGRATULATIONS! He has been given a great promotion at his work. Trina is still Primary President and busy with the kids’ school and activities. Stephanie is attending college and is active in the singles ward there. Kimberly has her own apartment and is working part time. Brett is doing well and is going out for football.

Dar & Brad: Dar is still crazy busy with 4 boys and all their activities, working at a stressful job full time, and being Primary President over more than 100 children. Brad is on a weight loss challenge with some of his friends and doing well. They both keep upgrading their home and yard and it is really comfortable. Paul is busy going out on dates and playing football and running track, and has earned his Eagle Scout award. Zac also does well at football, is working on his Eagle, and is counting the months until he can drive and date. Mitchell loves football and Taylor is taking swimming. Both boys are active in scouting also.

Glory Krista & Brian: I haven’t been able to talk with your this family much, but I know they made the trek to Orlando over spring break, and I’m sure it was the trip of a lifetime for the kids. I’m sure everyone is busy with jobs, school and other activities. Please let us all know how your family is doing!

Justin & Heather: It was a surprise to see them come to visit us in Utah, and we were happy to have them closer. They were able to spend a lot of time with Whitney, which was good for all. They are now back in Cave Junction where Justin is trying his hand at what he does best – fixing things. We wish them the best!

Alexia: CONGRATULATIONS!! Big kudos for attaining her Bachelor’s Degree in December. Now if she can just get a good job and get on with her life!! She is living in Bountiful “playing” as she puts it! Come on, Lex, you can do great things!

Tyson was offered an opportunity to manage the south Utah area for his company, and was sent to arrange for an office, parking for their trucks, hire 8 employees, arrange for electronic equipment, training, etc. What a huge undertaking! CONGRATULATIONS to him for managing all the responsibility he has been given.

Future Family Events: The BIG Johnson Reunion will be July 12 in Brigham City. Hollis’ family is in charge and it should be a fun time. If we can get everything arranged by then, we plan to have some of Stan’s beautiful paintings and other items available there for the family. He really wants to contribute to the family in every way he can. I think he will be a special guest of honor this year. Mark your calendars!

I also want to have a Stewart Family reunion perhaps late in August. If we would hear when any marriage dates would be, we could plan it the same week. I have a ton of ideas for fun things to do, and everyone could contribute to the food and it would be good just to be together. I also want to have our traditional Thanksgiving together, but sometimes travel if iffy then, so please let’s plan one this summer. It has been too long. Send your preferences and ideas – talk to each other, and let’s set a date!! It won’t happen if we don’t all contribute. Let's just DO IT! And who would like to be in charge? Any volunteers???

If I’ve left anything out or screwed anything up, I apologize! I love you lots and forever. Stay happy, healthy, humble and hopeful!

Love, Mom & Harold

Unexpected mission!

Well, here we are actually in Boise!! What an adventure these past 2 months have been. One mission ends and another begins - an unexpected one, but not one we will refuse nor ignore. We have been helping Stan, my sweet brother, following a stroke. It is a privilege to assist him as he recovers. We have made the trip from Portland to Boise and now are resting for a day or 2 before we continue on to Utah. The Crandall bed and breakfast is a wonderful stopover and we recommend it to all. It is a little crowded right now, but there's always room for one more. Stan, as well as us, are looking forward to spending time with family in Utah. Carry on, loved ones!

Introducing Harold and Nacele Hart!
